Hoes are used in the garden to:

• remove weeds
• agitate the surface of the soil around plants
• create drills and shallow trenches for planting seeds and bulbs
• dig and move soil
• chop weeds, roots and crop residues

There are a number of types of hoe, all of quite different appearance and functionality. Whilst some may perform a range of tasks, others are designed for a very specific purpose. The various styles are listed in the following table:
