Potting On

Young plants should not be planted out until the danger of frost is past. This may mean that they begin to outgrow their pot or tray before they can be planted outside, and so will need to be 'potted on'. This will also apply to plants that you intend to keep and display in the greenhouse.

Method

  1. Allow the compost to dry out slightly, so that the young plant may be removed easily from its container without disturbing the roots.
  2. Fill a new container with a layer of drainage material and potting compost; this pot should be large enough to fit the rootball along with a generous surrounding layer of compost. Do not use too large a container as this will slow down the formation of an established root system.
  3. Plant to the same depth, and firm the soil down well to remove any air pockets.
  4. Water thoroughly and leave to drain.
