Flea Beetles

Flea beetles are small black or metallic-blue beetles (Phyllotreta spp.) named for their habit of jumping like fleas when they are disturbed; adult flea beetles feed on the foliage of plants which can be seen as tiny shot holes in the upper surface of the leaves. If the damage is extensive enough, this may even cause the plant to die. Seedlings of brassicas, leafy vegetables, radishes and stocks (Matthiola) may be particularly affected. Flea beetles tend to overwinter in plant debris.

Control

Make sure that plant debris is cleared away, especially in the autumn. Apply an HCH seed dressing before sowing and ensure that seedlings are kept watered and healthy so that they may grow rapidly through the vulnerable stages.
