Deer can eat leaves and shoots from trees and shrubs. The males also often fray and strip bark during the winter as they mark trees with their scent glands or rub the velvet from new antlers.

Control

Place wire netting around stems and trunks, or protect gardens with wire mesh fences at least 2 m (6 ft) high. There have also been reports that deer may be successfully repelled by laying wire mesh horizontally on the ground around trees and other affected plants. Scaring devices such as hanging tin cans may work temporarily.
