How to Build Parquet Decking

A simple deck area may be made using deck tiles: small, parquet-type, timber squares. These may be purchased in a variety of styles, sizes and price ranges and may be coloured to match your garden. Alternatively, they can be made quite easily using 100 x 50 mm (4 x 2 in) treated timber.

Making the Deck Tiles

To make a deck tile 1 m (3 ft) square, cut 100 x 50 mm (4 x 2 n) treated timber into 1 m (3 ft) lengths. Use two lengths to form the two horizontal supports at the top and bottom of the square, whilst the other lengths should be positioned vertically. Space the vertical slats out evenly across the horizontal supports using spacers, and fix each slat with two nails at both ends.

Laying the Tiles

  1. Mark out the site to size, then level and compress the soil. If laying on old concrete, clear the area and make sure that it is level.
  2. To prevent weeds from growing through from below, lay landscape fabric over the area, and leave untrimmed until your tiles have been laid.
  3. Add a 7.5 cm (3 in) layer of compacted gravel, topped off with a further 7.5 cm (3 in) of sand.
  4. Level and tamp the area before laying the squares.
  5. Lay the tiles, orientating them to create the pattern you want, for example, alternating horizontal and vertical slats.
  6. When you are happy with the positioning of the tiles, nail or screw them together using galvanised or other non-rusting fixings. Drive the fixings in at an angle, making sure that they do not protrude from the surface.
  7. Add a skirting or edge board to create a finished look.
  8. Apply varnish, stain or paint as required. The manufacturer of your tiles may recommend the occasional application of a water repellent treatment to maximise the lifespan of the surface.
