Zauschneria

Family: Onagraceae

This is a genus of four species of subshrubs and perennials from western North America. They are good plants for sunny rock gardens.

Species

Z. californica, Californian fuchsia, grows to about 30 cm (12 in) in height, with a spread up to 50 cm (20 in). The small leaves are lance-shaped and the brilliant scarlet flowers are borne in loose spikes during summer or autumn. The hardier subsp. latifolia has broader leaves.

Cultivation

Zauschnerias will grow in any well-drained soil, but prefer a sandy loam and full sun. Propagate in spring, either from seed in a garden frame, or from basal cuttings in a heated propagating case.
