Viminaria

Family: Papilionaceae
Common Name: Rush Broom

This single-species genus is found in moist, temperate areas of Australia. It is similar to Spanish broom but tolerates a wider range of conditions. It is a shrub or small tree with a single trunk, long, slender branches almost devoid of leaves, and golden yellow, pea flowers. Viminaria is a useful ornamental for home and public gardens.

Species

V. juncea is a tall shrub, growing to 5 m (16 ft), with fresh green, flattened stems instead of leaves. The small, golden yellow, pea flowers with a light, clover fragrance, appear along the branches in late spring and summer. The fruit is a small pod with only one seed.

Cultivation

Propagate from seed, which has been first placed in boiling water and allowed to stand for 12 hours. Provide a germination temperature of 21°C (70°F). Plant in moisture-retentive soil in full sun or partial shade. In areas which are subject to hard frosts, grow in a cool greenhouse.
