This single-species genus is from the west coast of the United States. A popular indoor plant which can be grown both in pots and hanging baskets, it tolerates poor light.

Species

T. menziesii grows 30-60 cm (12-24 in) high, with long, hairy stems, to about 10 cm (4 in), bearing greenish purple flowers. It has bright green, hairy, ivy-shaped leaves, toothed at the margins. Plantlets are produced on the leaves and these will root it the leaves are pegged down into the soil, thus resulting in new plants.

Cultivation

Tolmieas can be grown both indoors and outdoors. In the garden, they need a mild climate, a moist, rich soil, and a shaded situation. If growing indoors, use a rich potting mix and keep moist. Propagate by division or by potting up the plantlets.
