Tetradenia

Family: Lamiaceae

This genus is not well known outside its countries of origin. It is native to South Africa and Madagascar and consists of five species of shrubs and perennials, all of which are aromatic and somewhat succulent. In frost-prone climates, grow these frost-tender plants in an intermediate to warm greenhouse or conservatory.

Species

T. riparia, misty plume bush, musk bush or nutmeg bush, grows to around 2 m (6 ft) high. The sprays of fluffy, mauve or white flowers are 20-40 cm (8-16 in) long, and the foliage is highly aromatic. It is a native of South Africa, where it flowers during the winter.

Cultivation

Under glass, grow in pots of soil-based potting compost and provide good light, but shade from direct, strong sun. Outdoors grow in a sheltered position with partial shade. Prune back hard after flowering to encourage a compact shape and new growth. Avoid over-feeding, as this will promote leafy growth at the expense of flowers. Propagate from cuttings in spring and root them in a heated propagating case.

Climate

Zone 10 or tropical.
