Tamarillo

Cyphomandra betacea
Family: Solanaceae
Common Name: Tree Tomato

This South American plant, related to Solanum melongena (eggplant), is grown both for its edible fruit and its ornamental qualities. It is a perennial, woody, tree-like shrub, growing to around 3 m (10 ft) high. The 8 cm (3 in) long, egg-shaped fruit has a smooth, dull red skin. It may be eaten raw, although, with its acidic taste, it is better poached and served with pure, rich cream.

Cultivation

In areas prone to frost, grow in an intermediate conservatory or greenhouse in pots of soil-based potting compost. Ensure good light, shade from direct sun, and provide a humid atmosphere. Liquid feed monthly in summer. Pruning may be required in late winter to control size. Outdoors grow in a sheltered spot with full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Propagate in spring from seed germinated at 18°C (64°F), or from semi-ripe cuttings in summer, with basal warmth.

Climate

Warmest parts of zone 10 to tropical.
