Strobilanthes

Family: Acanthaceae

There are about 250 species of attractive perennials and shrubs in this genus from tropical Asia. They may be deciduous or evergreen and generally have tubular, hooded flowers. Only a few species are grown. Outside the tropics, grow in a warm greenhouse or conservatory.

Species

S. anisophyllus (Synonym: Goldfussia anisophylla), from India, grows between 90 cm and 1.5 m (36-40 in) high, with bronze-green foliage and lovely, light blue flowers. It flowers in winter and spring but can bloom sporadically through the year.

S. dyeranus, from Burma, is a shrubby species, to 1 m (3 ft) high, with metallic-looking foliage, purple green and deep rose above and dark red to purple beneath.

Cultivation

Grow in pots of soil-based potting compost, under glass. Shade plants from strong, direct sun, but ensure good light. If necessary, shrubby species can be lightly pruned in spring to ensure a good shape. Propagate in spring from seed or softwood cuttings, in a warm propagating case.

Climate

Tropical.
