Streptosolen

Family: Solanaceae
Common Name: Orange Browallia, Marmalade Bush

Originating in Columbia and Peru, this single-species genus is an evergreen, sprawling shrub, valued for its attractive foliage and brilliant orange flowers.

Species

S. jamesonii grows to around 2 m (6 ft) high, producing masses of orange, trumpet-shaped flowers amongst the narrow, oval leaves, from late spring to late summer.

Cultivation

In frost-prone climates, grow in a cool or intermediate conservatory or green-house. Grow in pots of soil-based potting compost. Provide maximum light, but shade plants from strong, direct sun. If growing outside, plant in a sunny, sheltered spot in reasonably rich, well-drained, yet moist soil. Prune lightly in late winter to maintain a well-shaped plant. Propagate from semi-ripe cuttings in late summer, in a warm propagating case, or by layering in spring.

Climate

Zone 9 to tropical.
