Strelitzia

Family: Strelitziaceae
Common Name: Bird of Paradise

These five species of evergreen perennials, indigenous to South Africa, are valued for their spectacular flowers, reminiscent of exotic birds. They make excellent feature plants. All species have large, banana-like leaves and the familiar, large flowers with sharp, arrow-like petals. Clumps may reach very large proportions with age.

Species

S. alba is a clump-forming species to at least 10 m (33 ft) in height, and in spring produces white flowers from purplish spathes.

S. nicolai is another very large, clump-forming species, growing to about 10 m (33 ft) in height. This also flowers in spring and has striking, white and blue flowers from deep reddish spathes. The best known is S. reginae, bird of paradise flower, with spectacular, orange and blue flowers in winter and spring from green spathes flushed with orange and purple. 'this species grows to around 2 m (6 ft) high.

Cultivation

Strelitzias require warm, frost-free conditions, moist yet well-drained soil and a sunny spot. In frost-prone climates, grow in large pots or tubs in an intermediate to warm greenhouse or conservatory. Move these outside for the summer if desired. Use soil-based potting compost. Shade plants from strong, direct sun, but ensure good light.

Good ventilation is required. Plants need liberal watering when in full growth, plus liquid feeding every four weeks. Water far less in winter. Propagate in spring by removing and potting up rooted stickers.
