Stephanotis

Family: Asclepiadaceae
Common Name: Madagascar jasmine, wax flower

Only one species of this genus of evergreen, climbing plants, from the Malay Archipelago to Malagasy, is commonly cultivated. The glossy, dark green leaves contrast well with the clusters of small, white, waxy flowers, making stephanotis a popular choice of florists, particularly for bridal decorations.

Species

S. floribunda grows to around 4 m (13 ft). The elliptical leaves are thick, smooth-edged and shiny and the deliciously fragrant, white flowers make a lovely display from spring to autumn.

Cultivation

Outside the tropics, grow in a warm greenhouse or conservatory. Stephanotis also makes a good house plant. Grow in a pot of soilless or soil-based potting compost. Shade from direct, strong sun but ensure good light. Provide a humid atmosphere and supports for stems. If necessary, prune in late winter to restrict size. Propagate from semi-ripe cuttings in summer, in a heated propagating case.

Climate

Tropical.
