Star Anise

Native to south-eastern China and north-eastern Vietnam, this is a slow-growing tree that may reach 15 m (50 ft) in ideal conditions. It has elliptical leaves, up to 15 cm (6 in) long, and pretty, star-shaped flowers that are cream, ageing to pink, then maroon. The flowers resemble some species of magnolia and the genus Illicium was previously in the Magnoliaceae family. The unripe fruits are used as a culinary spice and oil is distilled from the fruit to flavor liqueurs. Star anise has some medicinal applications.
Cultivation
These trees need well-drained, acid soil, rich in organic matter. They can be grown in full sun or partial shade, but should he sheltered from strong wind. In climatic zones below 9, grow in a cool greenhouse or conservatory in pots of acid, soil-based potting compost.
