Selaginella

Family: Selaginellaceae
Common Name: Little Club Moss

A large group of primitive plants, there are about 700 species distributed throughout tropical and subtropical regions of the world, with some occuring in temperate climates. Although moss-like in appearance, they reproduce from spores, like ferns. They are shallow rooted and low growing, creeping along the ground, making good groundcovers for damp, shady spots. They also do well in pots and hanging baskets. Colours of foliage include both light and dark green, gold and blue-green shades. Although they tend to multiply freely in suitable conditions, they are not difficult to pull out if they are unwanted.

Species

Garden centres mainly carry plants of cultivated varieties rather than the species, as enthusiasts tend to collect a range of foliage forms and colours.

S. braunii, from China, has small, silvery green leaves and a compact form. It is cultivated outdoors in mild regions in sheltered-shade positions.

S. kraussiana, spreading club moss, is the species many people consider a pest, although it is decorative. It is an African species which has become naturalized in most warmer parts of the world. There is a golden form 'Aurea' and a more compact variety cushion type known as 'Brownii'.

S. pallescens, known as moss fern or sweat plant in the United States, is native to North and South America. It can be grown outdoors in the tropics or subtropics, but requires greenhouse conditions elsewhere.

S. uncinata, rainbow fern or peacock moss, has a metallic sheen of blue-green lighting up the foliage. Originally from China, it has become naturalized in warm and tropical areas.

Cultivation

Most of the species listed here need to be grown in an intermediate to warm green-house or conservatory, in pots of soil-based potting compost containing some leaf mould, if it is available. Ensure good light (but shade from direct sun), and a humid atmosphere. Keep compost moist at all times. Outdoors, grow in a partially shady spot, with moist soil containing plenty of humus. Propagate by division , in spring.

Climate

Zone 10, but S. braunii will survive in zone 8.
