Sandersonia

Family: Colchicaceae
Common Name: Chinese Lantern Lily

This is a genus containing only one species. Now rare in its native South Africa, this perennial climber. which grows from tubers, is an unusual subject for frost-free gardens or, where frosts occur, for an intermediate conservatory or greenhouse.

Species

S. aurantiaca, Chinese lantern lily, grows 80 cm (32 in) high. The linear to lance-shaped leaves are stem-clasping, and the satiny, rich gold to orange flowers are carried on slender, drooping stems. These may need light sup-port to prevent them from toppling over. This is an excellent cut flower.

Cultivation

If growing in pots under glass, plant tubers in gritty, well drained, soil-based potting compost. Plant about 7 cm (3 in) deep in early spring. Ensure plants receive maximum light, but shade them from direct, strong sun. Water normally and liquid teed monthly when in full growth, but as the plants die down, start reducing water and keep completely dry during the dormant period. If growing in the garden, choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil containing plenty of humus. Keep off excessive rain over winter. Propagate by division while dormant, or from ripe seed germinated at 21°C.

Climate

Zone 9 if relatively frost free.
