Rhodoleia

Family: Hamamelidaceae

There are around seven species of small, ever-green trees in this genus originating from Asia. Only one is generally cultivated and is grown for its attractive foliage and flowers which bloom from late winter through spring.

Species

R. championii, from China and I long Kong, grows 3-5 m (10-16 ft) high, with oval, leathery leaves borne at the branch tips and clusters of deep rose pink flowers. The blooms have a silky texture and prominent, decorative stamens.

Cultivation

This tree prefers warm temperate or subtropical areas, but will thrive in any well-drained soil. Grow in a sunny or semi-shaded position, provided it is sheltered from strong wind. In frosty climates, grow in a cool green-house in pots of soil-based potting compost. Lightly prune after flowering. Propagate from seed or cuttings in late spring or late autumn.
