Pterostylis

Family: Orchidaceae
Common Name: Greenhoods

This genus comprises some 60 species of tiny, terrestrial orchids from Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea and New Caledonia, though few species are in general cultivation. They are known for their unusual, hood-like dower formation, from which their common name has evolved.

Species

P. grandiflora grows 15-25 cm (6-10 in) high, with a solitary, erect, translucent, green flower with reddish brown bands.

Cultivation

Grow in an intermediate greenhouse or conservatory, in shallow pots of terrestrial orchid compost. Be careful with watering as these orchids do not like overwatering.

Climate

Zone 10.
