Psoralea

Family: Papilionaceae
Common Name: Scurfy Pea

The 130 species in this genus of fragrant shrubs and perennials, grown mainly for their flowers, are found mostly in North and South America and South Africa.

Species

P. affinis, to 3 m (10 ft), produces blue or purple, summer flowers.

P. pinnata, to 3 m (10 ft), is a fast-growing shrub with a profusion of blue and white flowers, in summer. It is the most commonly cultivated species.

Cultivation

Psoraleas do best in a warm temper-ate climate. In cooler areas, grow in pots in a cool greenhouse or conservatory, using soil-based potting compost. In the garden, choose a spot in full sun, with moderately fertile soil. Trim plants after flowering to reduce seed set, as they tend to self-sow.

P. pinnata, especially, needs pinching during the growing season and pruning after flowering for compact, tidy growth. Propagate from seed.

Climate

Warmest parts of zone 9.
