Prickly Pear

Opuntia ficus-indica
Family: Cactaceae
Common Name: Indian Fig

Many species of Opuntia are grown as ornamentals, but this species is cultivated for its edible fruit. It is an almost tree-like cactus, growing 3-5 m (10-16 ft) high, with large, segmented, paddle-shaped leaves. It bears bright yellow flowers along the rims of the segments, and these mature into deep red to purple fruit. The succulent fruits are known and enjoyed in many parts of the world. To prepare fruit for eating, wash and scrub with a brush, to remove spines. Slice off the top and the bottom, slit the skin and peel. The fruit is eaten raw, sometimes sliced and sprinkled with lemon or lime juice, and the pulp is used in jams.

Cultivation

In frost-prone climates, grow in a cool greenhouse or conservatory in pots of cactus compost, with maximum light. Keep dry in winter and water normally at other times. Outdoors, grow in a sunny, well-drained spot. Propagate from the paddle-shaped segments. Separate from the parent plant, allow the cut end to dry for a few days, then insert in cuttings compost, under glass.

Climate

Best in zone 10 and above.
