Polyscias

Family: Araliaceae

There are about 100 species in this genus of tropical shrubs and trees, native to Asia, the Pacific region and Africa. In frost-prone climates, they are grown as ornamentals in a warm greenhouse or conservatory or as house plants in a warm room. They are valued for their attractive, often finely divided foliage. Flowers are generally cream or green and of no ornamental value. In their places of origin, some are used medicinally and for perfume, while others are used to stupefy fish to guarantee a good catch.

Species

P. filicifolia, fern leaf aralia, grows 2-2.5 m (6-8 ft) high. The very fine, lacy foliage makes it an ideal specimen plant, although it is grown as a hedge in some regions of the world. It is also grown as an indoor plant, but requires plenty of bright indirect light. Variegated forms are sometimes available.

P. guilfoylei is a tall shrub, 4-8 m (13-26 ft) high, native to various parts of Polynesia. The large, compound leaves often have white splashes or margins. Cultivar 'Victoriae' is a compact grower with finely divided leaves, distinctly edged in white.

Cultivation

Grow in pots of soil-based, potting compost in good light, but shade plants from direct sun. During the growing season, the plants appreciate a humid atmosphere. Outdoors plant in well drained, humus-rich soil in partial shade or full sun and water well in summer. Propagate from semi-ripe cuttings in summer or alternatively, from seed in spring. Provide basal warmth for both.

Climate

Zone 10 to tropical.
