Found in tropical regions around the world, this genus comprises more than 600 species of perennials, grown both indoors and outdoors for their handsome foliage. These plants may he succulent or woody, and growth may be upright or creeping and mat forming.

Species

P. cadierei, aluminium plant, grows to 30 cm (12 in) and has dark green leaves with silvery markings.

P. microphylla, artillery plant, grows to 35 cm (14 in). The foliage densely clothes the stems and the flower buds burst to release their pollen. In warm areas, this species can be invasive.

P. nummularifolia, creeping Charlie, is a creeping type, suitable for hanging baskets.

Cultivation

Outside warm and tropical climates, grow as house plants or as pot plants in a warm greenhouse or conservatory. They do best in halt pots or pans of soilless potting compost. Provide good light (but shade from direct sun), and a humid atmosphere. Allow compost to become dry on the surface before watering. Propagate in spring from cuttings made from the stem tips. Provide basal warmth for rooting.
