Phlebodium

Family: Polypodiaceae

This genus of ferns is found from Florida through to Central and South America. One species, Phlebodium aureum, the golden polypody, is widely grown. In frost-prone climates, it needs a warm greenhouse or conservatory.

Species

P. aureum, golden polypody or rabbit's foot fern, takes its name from the thick, hairy rhizomes that creep along the soil surface. Autumn, deeply lobed fronds on strong stems may grow to 1 m (3 ft) high. The variety sold as 'Glaucum' or var. aureolatum has distinct, blue-green foliage. Many other cultivars are hard to identify except by fern experts. Mature fronds pro-duce conspicuous, round, golden yellow spore cases on the underside of the fronds. These tend to self-sow freely.

Cultivation

In the greenhouse, grow in a pot of soil-based potting compost with added leaf mould and chipped bark. Ensure that plants receive good light, but shade them from direct sun. Do not overwater but keep the compost steadily moist. Far less water is needed in winter. Propagate in the spring by dividing established plants.

Climate

Warmest parts of zone 9 to tropical.
