Phaius

Family: Orchidaceae

Found in tropical habitats in Southeast Asia, Australia and the Pacific Islands, this genus consists of 30 species of terrestrial orchids, only a few of which are commonly cultivated. The flowers are carried on tall, upright stems and are often quite spectacular.

Species

P. tankervilliae, from Australia and Asia, is a magnificent, tall species, with long, glossy leaves and interesting flowers, with red-brown sepals and petals, a white back and a magenta lip. Between four and twelve flowers are produced in summer on stems up to 1 m (3 ft) high.

Cultivation

Grow in a warm greenhouse or conservatory in pots of proprietary orchid compost (formulated for terrestrial orchids). Deep pots are needed to accommodate the extensive root system. Summer requirements include a very humid atmosphere, copious watering, and good light, but shade from direct sun. Liquid feed about once a week. In winter, ensure maximum light and reduce watering and humidity. Propagate by division when plants outgrow their pots.

Climate

Tropical.
