Paradisea

Family: Asphodelaceae

The two species in this genus are native to moist woodlands and meadows of southern Europe. Clump-forming perennials, their flowers are fragrant and make lovely cut blooms.

Species

P. liliastrum, St Bruno's lily, from mountainous areas of southern Europe, is a herbaceous perennial, growing to about 40 cm (16 in) high, from a rhizomatous rootstock. White, funnel-shaped flowers are borne on long, thin stems in early summer. The strap-like leaves are grayish green in colour. Cultivar 'Major' grows twice as high as the species, also producing much larger flowers.

P. lusitanicum, from Portugal, may grow over 80 cm (32 in) in height. Its white, summer flowers are borne in large numbers on strong stems.

Cultivation

These plants like a well-drained soil and a moist, semi-shaded situation. They grow well in cooler, coastal regions, with some wind and sun protection. Propagate by division in early spring. Plant the rhizomes 15-20 cm (6-8 in) deep and then leave undisturbed.
