Nolina

Family: Agavaceae

These tree-like succulents are native to Mexico. The bark-covered trunk is 3-6 m (10-20 ft) tall, slender at the top and very swollen at the base. The long, narrow, leathery, tapering leaves form clusters at the top of the trunk and are sometimes pendulous. The small flowers are borne in large sprays.

Species

N. bigelowii (Synonym: Dasylirion bigelowii) has a reasonably short trunk. The old leaves hang from the trunk like a grass skirt. The sprays of greenish coloured flowers are borne on 3 m (10 ft) tall stems.

Cultivation

In frost-prone climates, these plants need to be grown in an intermediate greenhouse or conservatory. Use soil-based potting compost. Provide maximum light. Water in moderation during the growing season and reduce even more in winter. Outdoors grow in full sun with well-drained soil (established plants take arid conditions). Propagate in spring from seed germinated at 21°C (70°F), or from offsets in spring.
