Kohleria

Family: Gesneriaceae

This small genus of rhizomatous perennials and shrubs conies from tropical America.

Species

Several species and hybrids are grown. Highly regarded and readily available is K. eriantha, with oval, dark green leaves which have red hairs along the edges, and clusters of tubular, reddish-orange flowers with yellow spots. The plant grows to a height of 1.2 m (4 it).

Cultivation

These tender plants are grown as pot plants in warm greenhouses and conservatories. Rhizomes are started into growth in spring. Use acid, soilless potting compost. Plants need a growing temperature of at least 21°C; (70°F). Ensure a humid atmosphere during the growing period and shade plants from direct sun. Plants die down in autumn, when stems should be removed and rhizomes kept virtually dry over winter. Propagate by division in spring.

Climate

Tropical only.
