Kigelia

Family: Bignoniaceae
Common Name: Sausage Tree

This genus comprises only one species of ever-green tree, native to woodlands and more open country of tropical Africa. It is often grown as a curiosity, either as a specimen or shade tree, in tropical gardens.

Species

K. pinnata, sausage tree, grows 10-15 m (33-50 ft) high. The pinnate leaves are dark green and leathery. The very dark burgundy flowers, suspended on long stems, emerge from yellowish buds. Their unusual odor is attractive to bats, their natural pollinators. The woody, cylindrical fruits, 30-50 cm (12-20 in) long, are beige-brown when ripe, lasting on the tree for many months.

Cultivation

Grow in a warm greenhouse, in a large pot or tub of soil-based potting compost. Shade from direct strong sun. It may be necessary to prune lightly in late winter. Propagate from seed sown in spring and germinated at 22°C (72°F).

Climate

Warmer parts of zone 10, and above.
