Holmskioldia

Family: Verbenaceae
Common Name: Chinese Hat Plant

Native to warm, coastal areas of India, Madagascar and Africa, these shrubs are valued for their exotic red flowers and rapid growth.

Species

H. sanguinea is a vigorous, scrambling, evergreen shrub, growing to 3.5 m (11 ft) or more, and cultivated mostly for its clusters of quite unique flowers, formed from a narrow, red tube backed by a spreading, red calyx. The long, arching canes make it perfect for espaliering. There is also a yellow-flowered form available.

Cultivation

Except in tropical climates, grow in a warm greenhouse or conservatory, in pots or soil bed. Use soil-based potting compost for containers. Shade from direct sun but ensure good light. Provide supports for the stems. Prune after flowering to keep plant within bounds. Propagate from semi-ripe cuttings in late summer. They need bottom heat to root.

Climate

Tropical climates only.
