Heterocentron

Family: Melastomataceae

Originating from mountainous areas of Mexico and Central America, these small, showy shrubs may be erect or prostrate. The bright green leaves are oval in shape and the attractive flowers are brightly coloured.

Species

H. elegans, Spanish shawl, is a low-growing, evergreen species to 10 cm (4 in), with oval, mid-green leaves and magenta flowers in summer and autumn. It makes a good hanging basket. Under glass, or in frost-free gardens, it makes good groundcover. It is a native of Mexico, and can also be found in Honduras and Guatemala.

Cultivation

In frost-prone climates, grow in an intermediate greenhouse or conservatory, or as house plants. Use soil-based potting compost and ensure maximum light, but shade from direct strong sun. For bushy plants, pinch out growing tips. Propagate by division in spring.

Climate

At least zone 10.
