Hesperis

Family: Brassicaceae

This genus of fragrant biennials and perennials is suited to temperate climates. The species H. matronalis in particular is cultivated widely in parts of the UK, where it has also become naturalized. The narrow foliage is quite unremarkable, though the fragrant blooms are very pretty, resembling those of stocks.

Species

H. matronalis, sweet rocket or Dame's violet, zone 3, is an erect perennial which grows to 1 m (3 ft) high. The white or lilac flowers are very fragrant on summer evenings.

H. tristis, zone 6, a biennial which grows to 60 cm (24 in), is also very fragrant on summer nights. The flowers may be white, yellowish green, red or purple.

Cultivation

These plants need well-drained, humus-rich soil and sun or partial shade. Plant in spring or autumn, water well in dry weather and fertilize in early spring. Remove spent flower stalks in autumn. Hesperis species self-sow.

Climate

Grows best in mild to cool, moist areas.
