This genus comprises around 26 species of dioe­cious or polygamous trees from India, Asia and Australia, growing 10-15 m133-50 ft) tall. They are probably not available outside their native countries.

Species

H. arborea, from Malaysia and the Philippines, grows to 10 m (33 ft), with sprays of pendulous flowers and bright orange fruit.

H. pendula, Australian tulipwood, produces a beautiful timber used in cabinetmaking. It grows 10-15 m (33-50 ft) tall. Its insignificant, yellow flowers are followed by striking red and yellow fruits.

Cultivation

In frosty cool and cold climates, this tree would have to be grown as a small speci­men plant in an intermediate to warm green-house or conservatory. Propagate from seed or cuttings.
