Gordonia

Family: Theaceae

From Southeast Asia, except for one North American species, these evergreen, warm-temperate trees and shrubs have leathery leaves and bear beautiful, fragrant flowers, resembling the single camellia, in autumn, winter and early spring. The flowering season depends on the climate where they are grown.

Species

G. axillaris, zone 8, from southern China and Hong Kong, is an evergreen species, growing to around 4-6 m (13-20 ft), with pure white or creamish white flowers, up to 7.5 cm (3 in) across, with golden stamens. Sometimes the petals are frilled at the edges. A lovely, small tree for the home garden, it is also used successfully as a street tree.

Cultivation

In relatively frost-free climates, grow in a woodland garden, in acid to neutral, moisture-retentive soil with dappled shade or full sun. Shelter plants from cold winds. In frosty climates, grow in pots of acid, soilless potting compost in a cool greenhouse. Shade from direct sun. Propagate from semi-ripe cuttings in summer.

Climate

Zone 9 for most species.
