Dorotheanthus

Family: Aizoaceae
Common Name: Livingstone Daisy

These succulent, prostrate annuals from Cape Province in South Africa produce an abundance of brightly coloured flowers which close up when not exposed to full sunshine. Minute protuberances make their leaves glisten in the sun.

Species

D. bellidiformis, Livingstone daisy, comes in white, pale pink, red, orange and white, tipped with red. Massed displays in rockeries, beds and planter boxes are very appealing.

Cultivation

Sow seed under glass in early spring, germinate at 19°C (66°F) and plant out young plants when danger of frost is over. Choose a site in full sun.

Climate

Zone 10 but grown as a summer annual in all climates.
