Dais

Family: Thymelaeaceae

Native to South Africa and Madagascar, this genus contains only two species, one of which is cultivated in the garden.

Species

D. cotinifolia is an upright, partly deciduous tree, which in very warm areas may be evergreen. It grows rapidly to 5 m (16 ft), and has oval leaves and umbrella-shaped heads of mauve-pink summer flowers. It is not frost-hardy but tolerates fairly low temperatures.

Cultivation

Plant in a sunny, well-drained spot, with shelter from wind. Propagate from cuttings taken in midsummer.

Climate

Zone 9, provided the area is relatively frost-free.
