Crowea

Family: Rutaceae

This genus comprises three species of compact, evergreen shrubs, all native to Australia, which will often spot flower throughout much of the year, although more profusely in their major flowering period, usually throughout summer to autumn.

Species

C. exalata, to 30-60 cm (12-24 in), has starry, pink flowers along the stems, through summer and autumn, and lance-shaped leaves.

C. saligna, which grows to 30-60 cm (12-24 in), has deeper pink flowers with yellow anthers. This species has the largest flowers. Foliage of all species is aromatic.

Cultivation

In frost-prone climates, grow in pots in a cool, airy conservatory or greenhouse. Use soil-based potting compost. Provide maximum light but shade from direct sun. After flowering cut back the old-flowered shoots fairly hard. Outdoors plants need good drainage and full sun or, in hot areas, partial shade. Propagate from semi-ripe cuttings in summer, or from seed in spring, providing bottom heat for both.
