Consolida

Family: Ranunculaceae
Common Name: Larkspur

This genus of 40 species of annuals from the Mediterranean east to central Asia, was at one time grouped with Delphinium, but botanic variations distinguish them. One species is widely grown for garden ornament and as a cut flower.

Species

C. ajacis and C. orientalis are the parents of the many strains of garden larkspur available today. They are upright growers to over 60 cm (24 in) tall. The foliage is finely divided and decorative. The flowers may be blue, white or shades of pink through to almost red, and many are doubles. They make excellent cut flowers.

Cultivation

Sow directly where plants are to grow, in autumn in mild areas for spring flowering, and in spring in cool zones for summer flowering. Plant in full sun with protection from strong wind. The soil should be well drained and enriched with organic matter. Give ample water once plants are growing strongly.
