Previously included in the genus Bignonia, these attractive South American plants, with evergreen leaves and showy trumpet flowers, climb by means of coiled tendrils. Outside the subtropics, these plants may he deciduous.

Species

C. callistegioides grows quickly and densely, producing a profusion of pale violet flowers, with darker striping in the throats, in summer. It will grow 10 m (33 ft) in a season in warm conditions.

Cultivation

Grow in a warm greenhouse or conservatory in frost-prone climates. Use large pots or tubs filled with soil-based potting compost. Ensure maximum light, shade from direct sun and a humid atmosphere. Support of some kind will be needed for the stems. Thin out some of the oldest growth at the end of the flowering season. In frost-free climates grow outdoors in a sunny spot with well-drained, fertile soil. Propagate from semi-ripe cuttings in summer, or from seed in spring. Provide bottom heat for both.
