Chrysocoma

Family: Asteraceae

Related to the aster, these South African shrubs grow 60 cm (24 in) or less. They have small, straight, alternate leaves and short-stalked, round, yellow flower heads.

Species

C. coma-aurea is a small, evergreen shrub, to 45 cm (18 in), with yellow flowers, straight stems and smooth, flat, entire leaves.

Cultivation

Chrysocoma does best in areas where the minimum winter temperature does not autumn below 7°C (45°F), so in frost-prone areas, grow in a cool greenhouse or conservatory. It likes soil which is well drained and a sunny, sheltered position. In pots, use a compost of equal parts of peat, sand and loam. Water well in spring and summer but only moderately at other times of the year. Propagate from cuttings taken in the spring.
