Cercidiphyllum

Family: Cercidiphyllaceae

Comprising only one species and native to China and Japan, this hardy, deciduous tree is grown for its beautiful foliage. It is generally cultivated as a specimen tree.

Species

C. japonicum, katsura tree, grows quickly to about 12 m (40 ft) under cultivation, though in its native habitat it can reach heights of 40 m (130 ft). The trees have upward-sweeping branches and handsome foliage in autumn. The leaves change from bronzepurplecrimson in early spring to light green and finally to brilliant gold and scarlet in autumn.

Cultivation

Cercidiphyllum likes rich, moist soil and an open position, and will tolerate lime, but best autumn colour is in acid or neutral soil. It grows best in a cool to temperate climate. Fertilize every three or four years. Propagate by seed sown in spring.
