Celosia

Family: Amaranthaceae

Native to tropical Asia, these annuals produce plume-like flowers similar to grasses or crested cockscombs. They provide attractive summer garden displays, and the long-lasting blooms make excellent cut flowers. They are also grown as summer pot plants in intermediate conservatories or greenhouses.

Species

The species is C. argentea var. cristata, but it is split into two groups. The Cristata or Cockscomb Group has tightly packed flowers, creating a crested or coral-like flower head. There are many cultivars in a range of colours including reds and yellows. Cultivars in the Plumosa Group, popularly known as Prince of Wales' feathers, have feathery, pyramid-shaped flower heads and are generally the most popular for use as pot plants and summer bedding. Again there is a wide range of bright colours including reds and yellows.

Cultivation

Sow seed in spring and germinate at 18°C (64°F). Plant out when danger of frost is over. Outdoors, grow in full sun and well-drained moist soil.

Climate

Zone 10, but grown as a summer annual.
