Brunsvigia

Family: Amaryllidaceae

These tender, bulbous plants are originally from South Africa. In summer and autumn, a dazzling display of large, funnel-shaped, red or pink flowers radiate from the tops of the tall, bare stems.

Species

B. josephinae, Josephine lily, produces bright red flowers, 6 cm (2½ in) long. The ribbed leaves, to 1 m (3 ft) long and 4 cm (1½ in) wide, appear after flowering. This species grows to 45 cm (18 in).

Cultivation

The bulbs, which grow as large as 25 cm (10 in) across, like a rich, well-drained soil and full sun when planted in the garden. Water only when growth begins and continue until the leaves turn yellow, then cease altogether. In climates prone to hard frosts, grow in a cool greenhouse or conservatory, in pots of soil-based potting compost. Plant in autumn. The neck of the bulb should be above compost level. Ensure maximum light and water normally when in growth but very little when dormant.

Climate

Suitable for outdoor cultivation in zone 9.
