Breynia

Family: Euphorbiaceae

Can only be grown outdoors in the warmest areas, with wind protection and well-drained soil. Elsewhere grow in a warm greenhouse or conservatory or as houseplants. They are also useful for warm seaside gardens, though they must be protected from strong winds. Breynia has small, oval leaves and single, inconspicuous flowers.

Species

B. nivosa (Synonym: B. disticha), known as the snow bush, is the most commonly grown species. The cultivar 'Rosea Picta' is even more desirable as its oval leaves are mottled pink and white. The flowers are insignificant. It grows 1 m (3 ft) or more high and would make a pretty addition to the conservatory or windowsill indoors.

Cultivation

In Europe, Breynia is grown in a warm greenhouse or conservatory, or as a house plant. They are best in pots of soil-based potting compost and in maximum light, but with shade from direct sun. Plants will need pruning to keep them to a manageable size.

Climate

Subtropics and tropics.
