Bracteantha

Formerly Helichrysum
Family: Asteraceae
Common Name: Everlasting Daisy

This particular genus of Australian everlasting or paper daisies was formerly classified with Helichrysum. One of the species is the most commonly cultivated of all the everlasting daisies.

Species

B. bracteata is a strong-growing perennial, up to 1 m (3 ft), often best grown as an annual. The foliage is a dull mid-green but the daisy-type flowers are bright golden yellow with a glossy sheen. Of the several good cultivars available, 'Dargan Hill Monarch' is one of the best. This species provides good cut and dried flowers.

Cultivation

The species below is grown as a half-hardy annual, although it is strictly a short-lived perennial. It is used for bedding out in the summer. Sow seed under glass in spring and germinate in warmth. Plant out when danger of frost is over. In warmer areas sow in flowering position in late spring. This plant likes well-drained soil and an open, sunny position. Although it is tolerant of drought, better results will be achieved by regular watering during dry weather. Flowers for drying, for indoor decoration, should be picked when they are only half open.

Climate

Zone 9 and above, but grown as a summer annual.
