Berberidopsis

Family: Flacourtiaceae

This exquisite evergreen semi-climbing shrub from Chile has leathery, dark green leaves and pendulous clusters of deep crimson flowers in summer.

Species

B. corallina has clusters of small, crimson flowers during summer to early autumn. If growing conditions are suitable, the floral display will be brilliant.

Cultivation

This shrub needs a warm spot and good drainage. It generally enjoys woodland conditions of dappled sunlight and shelter. If planting near a wall, make sure that the plant is positioned a little away from the wall to avoid dryness in summer and waterlogging in winter. In mild areas, plant in a shady spot in light, peaty soil with plenty of organic matter. It does not like lime. Propagate from semi-ripe cuttings taken in late summer or by layering young stems in the spring.

Climate

This plant can be grown in zone 8.
