Barleria

Family: Acanthaceae

Originating from tropical India, Asia and Africa, this large genus of fast-growing, evergreen shrubs is not widely grown in the US.

Species

B. cristata, Philippine violet, is not a violet and actually comes from India and Burma. It has narrow, pointed, bright green leaves and white or mauve tubular flowers, with spiny margins. This shrub looks very pretty in summer when in full bloom.

B. obtusa is slightly smaller and is usually around 60 cm (24 in). It has small, oval leaves and clusters of short, blueish mauve winter and spring flowers with five distinct lobes. The flowers of this species do not have spines.

Cultivation

Grow in an intermediate greenhouse in cool and cold climates, in pots of acid, soil-based compost. Shade from strong sun. In warm climates plant outdoors in acid soil, enriched with manure and compost. These shrubs need heat and humidity in summer and dry winters. Propagate from cuttings under glass.

Climate

Zone 10.
