Archways, Arbours & Pergolas

Arbours and pergolas form a shaded walkway or sitting place, which can increase the sense of privacy and mystery in a garden. Arches are less elaborate structures, and may be used over existing paths or to mark entrances from one part of the garden to another. All three provide a wonderful opportunity to grow climbers such as roses, honeysuckle or wisteria.

You can build any of these structures yourself using a variety of materials such as brick, wood or metal; alternatively, there are many simple kits available to buy. In this section we'll guide you step by step through making an arch, pergola or arbour using kits or building them from scratch from pressure treated timber or naturally durable wood such as western red cedar.
